Recent deal acquisition would willingly re-sign with the Celtics.
Jrue Holiday joined the Boston Celtics via trade this summer. He soon established himself as a valuable element of the team’s rotation.
However, there are questions about his long-term future with the team. Holiday’s contract includes a $39.4 million player option for following season. He is expected to decline that choice.
During a recent interview with MassLive’s Brian Robb, Holiday stated that he would “prefer” to stay with the Celtics going forward.
Holiday, 33, is a key member of the Celtics’ starting five. He and Derrick White have developed a formidable backcourt duo. He is also a top defensive guard in the NBA.
In Boston, Holiday has the opportunity to compete for championships for many years to come.
However, the opportunity to be a competitor requires some sacrifice. Nobody in the Celtics rotation is having a career year. Instead, everyone is doing their part and performing for the team.
That means Holiday will have less chances to receive solo accolades. Of course, if that sacrifice yields one or more championship rings, it will be worthwhile.
Boston presently has the best record in the NBA. They are first in the Eastern Conference. They also have probably the league’s deepest eight-man rotation. There’s a reason they’re considered probable title favorites.
If the Celtics can re-sign Holiday to a multi-year contract, they will likely lengthen their championship window. Furthermore, the veteran guard’s deal could become movable in the future, giving the front management more options.
It makes sense for both sides to find a way to extend Holiday’s time in Boston.
