NFL fans will have to wait another year before quarterback Cam Ward on the field.

Ward first entered the transfer portal in December, but declared for the 2024 NFL Draft on New Year’s Day. He has recently reversed that decision and will compete with Albany transfer Reese Poffenbarger for the Hurricanes’ starting quarterback spot.
Ward began his collegiate career at FCS Incarnate Word in 2020, when he received the Jerry Rice Award as the most outstanding FCS freshman player. In his two seasons with the program, he threw for nearly 7,000 yards with 71 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

He transferred to Washington State for the 2022 season and excelled throughout his two seasons with the Cougars, throwing for 6,968 yards, 48 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions. Before declaring, he was regarded as one of the top transfer portal quarterbacks, and he was expected to be drafted in the second or third round in the NFL.
Instead, he hopes to help the Hurricanes move ahead after a 7-6 season that included a loss to Rutgers in the Pinstripe Bowl.
