The controversial hit

The hit happened while Higbee was attempting to catch a pass. Joseph’s collision caused his leg to bend unnaturally, resulting in contact with his shoulders and back. Despite the severity of Higbee’s injury, Joseph received no penalty. The lack of a penalty has fuelled the dispute, with many doubting the nature of the hit and the subsequent judgment by officials.

Accusations and Defenses

Matthew Stafford, the Rams’ quarterback, was openly critical of Joseph. He was caught on a mic’d-up video saying Joseph was ‘filthy as f-k.’ Stafford’s comment also referred to Joseph’s identical hit on Vikings tight end T.J. Hockenson, which resulted in an ACL rupture. However, Joseph justified his behavior after the game. He resorted to social media, claiming that he had no intention of causing injury and emphasizing the inherent dangers of football.

Lions’ Safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and coach Dan Campbell both jumped to Joseph’s defense. Gardner-Johnson argued that Stafford’s throw put Higbee in jeopardy, while Campbell advised Joseph to ‘always watch what you hit’ and avoid utilizing the helmet’s crown.

The Aftermath

Despite the controversy, the Lions were victors, earning their first playoff triumph in 32 years. Higbee, aged 31, is faced with the arduous task of rehabilitating in time for the next season. This incident has not only aroused criticism and controversy in the NFL community, but it has also brought attention to player safety and the essence of the game itself.
