Nebraska appoints Steelers’ Glenn Thomas as quarterback coach and co-OC.

LINCOLN, Nebraska — Glenn Thomas, a Pittsburgh Steelers assistant, has been appointed as Nebraska’s quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator, coach Matt Rhule announced on Wednesday.

Rhule also announced that Marcus Satterfield, offensive coordinator, will coach tight ends, and Josh Martin, who served as temporary offensive assistant coach last season, will return to his analyst role.

Thomas worked under Rhule at Temple and Baylor and has 15 years of college coaching experience. He has eight seasons of experience on NFL staffs, including three years in Atlanta as quarterback Matt Ryan’s position coach.

Thomas previously served as Arizona State’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2022. He held the same positions at UNLV.

Thomas will work alongside incoming five-star freshman quarterback Dylan Raiola, the Cornhuskers’ highest-rated recruit ever.

Iowa announced Thursday that interim athletic director Beth Goetz will be promoted to the permanent position.

A source tells ESPN that she had committed to a five-year contract. Goetz has been in the interim position since the summer. In 2022, Goetz left his post as Ball State’s athletic director to become Iowa’s chief operating officer.

Goetz’s promotion was long expected. She succeeds Gary Barta, who retired in May after 17 years as Iowa’s athletic director.

Goetz is the first woman to be Iowa’s head athletic director. The three previous athletic directors, Barta, Bob Bowlsby, and Bump Elliott, all served for at least 15 years.

“I am incredibly honored and humbled to lead Iowa’s legendary athletics program,” Goetz said. “And I am grateful to President Wilson and the search committee for their trust in my leadership. The University of Iowa is a world-class university with a documented commitment to athletic excellence, and I am excited to continue working with our coaches and staff to assist all of our student-athletes.

Goetz has a lengthy resume. In addition to nearly four years as Ball State’s athletic director, she has held positions at Connecticut, Minnesota, and Butler.

Goetz made global headlines in October when she fired Brian Ferentz, the football team’s offensive coordinator and son of head coach Kirk Ferentz. Three years in a row, the Hawkeyes’ offense has been one of the worst in the nation.

Nicole Grosland, a professor in the College of Engineering and chair of the search committee, stated that numerous sitting athletic directors from throughout the country were interviewed.

“Beth emerged as a finalist with a strong vision to lead the department at this crucial time,” Grosland said in a press release.

Goetz played soccer at Clemson and was a coach at Missouri-St. Louis before transitioning into athletic administration.
