West Ham have joined the race to recruit Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in January.

The Hammers are missing a number of key players due to injury, and David Moyes may aim to bring in one or two new players this month. They have done exceptionally well this season, and with a little support, the Hammers may also surprise everyone in Europe.

West Ham desperately needs to strengthen their midfield. They haven’t addressed Declan Rice’s void and can afford to sign an experienced player like Kalvin Phillips, who has become surplus to requirements at Manchester City.

According to Sky Sports, numerous Premier League clubs, including Everton and Crystal Palace, are interested in signing the 28-year-old, who is currently not in Pep Guardiola’s plans.

Should West Ham make a bid for him?
Newcastle have been linked with a deal for the former Leeds midfielder, but they believe his signing would be financially unsound.

Tottenham Hotspur are also interested in signing Phillips, although it appears that the Hammers are more eager. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Hammers are still major fans of the player, but the transfer will be difficult to complete.

City are willing to loan him out, but they want a loan fee of roughly £5 million and most, if not all, of his £135,000-per-week salaries paid in full.

With Everton struggling financially and potentially facing another financial penalty, the Hammers can fancy their chances here. Phillips is an excellent defensive midfielder who should thrive under Moyes.

He needs to play regularly right now to be in Gareth Southgate’s plans. He hasn’t played much this season under Guardiola, and his departure from the club is unavoidable at some point. The Hammers should make a move for him if City’s terms are reduced.
